Golf Lessons at The Navy Golf Course
Joe Grohman, PGA Head Professional
Mr. Grohman has been in the golf business for 20 years and has played golf for 38 years. Born and raised on military golf courses, Mr. Grohman is very happy to be back at the Navy G.C. The winner of 17 junior tournaments, Cypress College MVP and NCAA Division I golfer at Cal State Fullerton. Mr. Grohman began his professional career at the Navy Golf Course and became close friends with Earl, Tida and Tiger Woods and a member of “Team Tiger” for many years. During that time he wrote the book, “How to Golf Beginners Guide” that Earl Woods wrote the forward to. After becoming the head professional at Navy, Mr. Grohman left to be the Head Pro at Heartwell G.C. in Long Beach, followed by the Head Professional position at Whittier Narrows. While at Whittier Narrows, Mr. Grohman's “Kids on Course” program was given course and junior program “Best in Nation” awards from the USGA and the National Golf Course Owners Association. He also won the Sir Christopher Hatton tournament that year, a Southern California PGA Metro Chapter event. Mr. Grohman left Whittier Narrows to become the Head Pro at Chester Washington Golf Course in South L.A. After 3 years at Chester Washington, Mr. Grohman returned to the Navy Golf Course which he always felt was his “home” course.
Mr. Grohman has been very involved in junior golf and golf for the less fortunate. He is the PGA Pro for the First Tee program for South L.A., hosts annual clinics for the junior blind, physically and mentally challenged juniors and hosts a Disabled Veterans clinic every quarter. Mr. Grohman enjoys teaching the game to all comers, regardless of ability or capability.
John Hall, PGA Assistant Professional
John Hall has been in the golf business for over 25 years. Raised at Old Ranch Country Club since 1972, John played seven days a week for most of his childhood and became an accomplished golfer. He started working as a Golf Pro for Old Ranch in 1986. John worked his way to Assistant Pro then to First Assistant and finally became the Head Professional. John became a member of the PGA in 1996 and says he loves the golf business. Old Ranch was bought in 2006 and after nine months with the new owners John decided to move on down the road. He joined the teaching staff here at the Navy Golf Course teaching full time then deciding to join the Staff in the Pro Shop. John would like to send a special thanks to all the Members for their support and kindness.
Melissa Stephens, PGA Assistant Professional
Melissa Stephens has been a Golf Professional for over 20 years. She began her career at the Navy Golf Course in 1986 as a PGA Apprentice. After 2 years she was hired by Len Kennett, Lifetime member of the PGA, to work at Lakewood Country Club. In 1996 she earned her Class “A” Classification as a PGA member. During the course of the next 17 years she worked at Lakewood she was the Tournament Director and also a Teaching Professional. In 2007, Melissa returned to the Navy Golf Course where she currently works in the Pro Shop and as a Teaching Professional. Melissa enjoys teaching all aspects of the game to any age and ability level student.
